Behind the Evidence™ · Evidence-Based Storytelling

I Started 2026 With an Empty Portfolio. Here's What Happened Next.

Why I built Evidence-Based Storytelling™ — a personal account, starting with the moment it almost didn't happen.

In March 2026, while preparing a Thinkers360 portfolio submission, I discovered something uncomfortable: my 2025 portfolio was empty.

Not incomplete — empty. And I knew that wasn't an accurate picture of the year. Throughout 2025 I had been consulting, speaking, creating, and learning. The work had happened. The documentation of that work had not.

"I knew I hadn't spent 2025 doing nothing. But when I looked at the documented evidence of that work, there was virtually nothing there."

That gap is the reason Evidence-Based Storytelling™ (EBS™) exists, and it's the reason I eventually built the EBS™ Masterclass: Turn Your Evidence Into Authority.

The Decision

I took out a piece of paper and wrote down what I wanted to accomplish before the end of 2026. The goals felt ambitious:

The March 2026 Scorecard

  • 12 Substack articles
  • 12 professional blog articles
  • 3 speaking engagements
  • 1 proprietary framework
  • 1 collaboration
  • 1 Masterclass or course

I wasn't trying to become an influencer. I wanted to see what would happen if I became disciplined about documenting the expertise and work I was already building.

You may know what the flyer says today: Certified Expert, multiple Top Thought Leader recognitions, Top Voice, LinkedIn recognition, authorship. What you don't know is what happened between that empty portfolio in March and where things stand now.

The Elf/Santa Theory

Everybody sees Santa. Very few people see the elves.

Santa represents the visible outcome: the award, the invitation, the credential, the ranking, the speaking engagement, the media feature, the new client, the collaboration, the opportunity.

The elves represent everything that happened before anyone was paying attention: learning, practicing, writing, creating, publishing, documenting, networking, refining, failing, improving, showing up consistently and doing the work again.

The elves build behind the scenes. Santa gets photographed arriving.

When people see the outcome without seeing the evidence trail, it's easy to assume: "She became successful overnight." "She must have paid for that." "She must know somebody." What they didn't see was the elf stage.

March 2026 wasn't actually when the elves started working. It was when I became more intentional about documenting what I was already building.

The Elf Stage, In Hindsight

  • 2022 — graphic-design training, multimedia content, visual brand infrastructure
  • 2023 — co-authored a chapter in an Amazon #1 anthology, and joined ForbesBLK
  • 2024 — consistent publishing, LinkedIn Lives, podcast collaborations, audience growth, and LinkedIn Top Voice recognition
  • 2025 — continued authority-building and a Thinkers360 Top Voice honor
  • March 2026 — the wake-up call

My Thinkers360 portfolio showed me that work without documentation can become invisible evidence. That realization is what led directly to EBS™.

What Evidence-Based Storytelling™ Actually Does

EBS™ gives the elves a paper trail. The framework doesn't manufacture Santa. It documents what the elves are actually doing: Build → Document → Publish → Amplify → Validate → Compound. Then, when recognition eventually arrives, you can trace the outcome backward through a credible evidence trail — no exaggeration, no inflated claims, just a record a reader can independently confirm.

We shouldn't rely on what we remember. We should pull the actual March goals, establish the baseline, then audit the year's evidence against every target and calculate exactly where things stand.

No hype. No "overnight success." No need to defend against pay-to-play or connections. Show the starting point. Show the goals. Show the work. Show the receipts. Show the outcome. That's perhaps the purest demonstration of Evidence-Based Storytelling™ I've uncovered yet.

My portfolio was empty — but my career wasn't. I had expertise. I had experience. I had client work. I had accomplishments. What I didn't have was a disciplined system for turning all of that activity into documented, discoverable evidence.
